Description: The history of leisure is not very old. If today we take it for granted that we don't always have to work, then until the end of the 30s vacation was an unknown phenomenon. The normal Swedish working hours around 1900 were 60 to 75 hours a week. It was something that left very little time to engage in activities other than work. The eight-hour day, with a normal working week of 48 hours because people also worked on Saturdays, was first introduced in 1919. A consequence of this working time regulation was that the wider classes of people had time to devote themselves to other than work. Leisure became a sign of modernity. Free time was, however, time that, it was believed from the government, should be used sensibly and not just for passive time off.
